The heart at tissue level.
Alexander Semenovych’s research connects microcirculation, cardiac lymphatics and the changes in cells and tissues that accompany cardiovascular disease.
- Microcirculation and the cordion
Alexander Semenovych studied the three-dimensional organisation of the heart’s small vessels and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the myocardium. His work describes the cordion as a structural and functional unit of myocardial tissue with a relatively autonomous microcirculatory system. This approach links the structure of small vessels to the function of the surrounding heart tissue.
More selected works →- Cardiac lymphatics
One of his early questions was how impaired lymph drainage affects the myocardium. Alexander Semenovych investigated lymph congestion, its relationship with tissue injury and sclerosis, and the formation of lymphovenous shunts. He proposed a classification of cardiac lymphatic insufficiency.
Read the 1975 paper →- Endothelium, atherogenesis and stress
He investigated regional differences in the aortic endothelium and their relationship to the uneven distribution of atherosclerotic lesions. The 2009 monograph treats endothelial dysfunction as an interaction between lipid metabolism, neurohumoral and immune regulation. It gives particular attention to chronic stress and its role in atherogenesis.
Explore the 2009 monograph →- Ischaemia and cellular adaptation
His subjects included microcirculatory insufficiency, actively contracting and hibernating myocardium, intracellular repair and electrical instability. Alexander Semenovych described the labile association of mitochondria with one another and with other cardiomyocyte membrane structures as an adaptive response. His monograph with V. S. Paukov relates these processes to ischaemic cardiomyopathy.
Explore the 2015 monograph →- Hypertensive heart and heart failure
In his monograph on the hypertensive heart, Alexander Semenovych examines myocardial remodelling during prolonged high blood pressure. He relates stress, metabolic and vascular changes to increasing heart mass, limited cellular energy supply and the development of cardiosclerosis. Other studies addressed non-coronary mechanisms of chronic heart failure.
Explore the 2020 monograph →- Haemostasis and rheumatic disease
Alexander Semenovych also investigated platelet haemostasis in ischaemic heart disease, emotional and pain-related stress, and rheumatic conditions, as well as factors involved in the recurrent course of rheumatoid arthritis.
From tissue to cell.
Alexander Semenovych used electron microscopy, morphometry, angiography and cardiac biopsies in his research. He worked with clinical biopsy and experimental material.
The work compared changes in small vessels, cardiomyocytes, interstitial tissue and the lymphatic network. This approach examined the heart as an interconnected system, linking vascular and cellular disturbances to the support of myocardial function.

Проатерогенная эндотелиопатия
Pro-atherogenic endotheliopathy
Endothelial dysfunction is examined as a multifactorial process involving lipid metabolism, blood cells, the vascular wall, and neurohumoral and immune regulation. The author develops the concept of “pro-atherogenic endotheliopathy” and analyses chronic stress as a factor in atherogenesis.

Ischaemic cardiomyopathy
Using clinical and experimental material, the authors argue for ischaemic cardiomyopathy as an initial stage and underlying basis for subsequent forms of coronary heart disease. Their interpretation centres on microcirculatory changes, hypoxia at the level of the cordion, tissue and cellular injury, and adaptive myocardial responses.

Hypertensive heart: Functional morphology
The monograph examines structural and metabolic changes in the heart during chronic arterial hypertension. It considers microcirculation, the interstitium and contractile myocardium, stress responses and the conditions leading to heart failure. The author relates increasing heart mass to changes in energy supply and contractile efficiency.
