Kyiv. Studying the heart.
In 1976 Alexander Semenovych joined the Ukrainian Research Institute of Cardiology named after academician M. D. Strazhesko in Kyiv. He worked as a senior researcher, headed the laboratory of pathomorphology and electron microscopy, and later led the department of pathomorphology.
He investigated how the structure of small vessels, heart tissue and its cells relates to cardiac function and disease. His subjects included cardiac lymphatics, microcirculation, atherosclerosis, ischaemic injury and the hypertensive heart. Electron microscopy and morphometry were used to examine tissue and cellular changes in clinical and experimental material.
His higher doctoral dissertation was titled «Функциональная морфология миокарда при хронической ишемической болезни сердца» — on the functional morphology of the myocardium in chronic ischaemic heart disease. Alexander Semenovych defended it in 1985 and received the Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in 1986. He received the academic title of professor in 1999.
In 2018 Alexander Semenovych was Viktoriia Krychkevych’s scientific supervisor and headed the department of pathomorphology and electron microscopy at the Institute of Cardiology.
